The FICCI IIFA Global Business Forum, a part of the IIFA Weekend 2008 festivities, jointly organized the India Thailand Business Summit- The way forward on June 6, 2008 at Bangkok.
At the inaugural Session, Mr. Harsh Pati Singhania, Senior Vice President FICCI & Managing Director JK Paper Ltd stated that both India and Thailand are engaging themselves even more with India’s Look East and Thailand’s look West Policy. He said that the target of US $10 billion in bilateral trade set by our Commerce Minister is seemingly ambitious but certainly attainable.
Mr. Sabbas Joseph, Director, Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, the conceptualizers and promoters of IIFA, made an informative presentation on the IIFA Weekend and how IIFA had led to an increase in trade and tourism in countries where it was held. He highlighted that Thailand has become a preferred choice for film makers with over 30 films having been shot at Bangkok.
Mr. Pramon Sutivong, Chairman Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand sin his address to the august house aid that India and Thailand are ancient partners and commented that the FICCI IIFA Business forum is the reflection of the strong desire to strengthen our bilateral trade links. He further added that Indo-Thai bilateral trade was about US $ 5 billion last year.
Ms. Latha Reddy, Ambassador of India in Thailand in her address said that the Indian economy had become a trillion dollar economy and there is considerable interest and optimism worldwide about India. She said that India’s process of globalization started in 1990 and the Indian economy had shown resilience in this era of Globalisation. She said that she was hopeful that the Comprehensive FTA will be finalized soon and this would give a further Philip to India Thailand Bilateral trade.
The plenary session, a key part of the Global Business Forum, had some of the most prominent personalities from across industry verticals. The panel discussion led by Ms. Shereen Bhan, Bureau chief, CNBC on Enhancing India-Thailand Partnership had eminent panelists like Dr. Anusorn Muttraid, Chairman of Committee on India Affairs, Board of Trade of Thailand and Executive Director Delta Electronics, Thailand, PLE, Mr O.P. Lohia, National Executive Committee Member, FICCI and CMD, Indo Rama Synthetics (India) Limited, Mr. Manish Kapur, Partner, PriceWaterHouseCooper, Mr. Mangkorn Thanasarnsilp, Vice Chairman of Economic Affairs of The Federation of Thai Industries, Mr. Sanjeev Aga, Idea Cellular Ltd and Mr. Uday Shankar, CEO, Star India Ltd.
The main highlight of the Forum was the presentation of the Global Leadership Award 2008 to Dr R K Pachuri, Nobel Laureate and renowned environmental scientist for his outstanding contribution in spreading awareness on one of the most alarming global threats faced by the earth today: Climate Change. Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, IIFA Brand Ambassador, presented the honour to Dr Pachuri and expressed his support in the campaigning against Global Warming.
The Global Business Forum was witness to another round of panel discussion by Ms. Shreen Bhan on Building Bridges: India and Thailand. Mr. Harsh Pati Singhania, Sr. Vice President, FICCI, Mr. Shailesh Rao, MD, Google India, Ms. Dia Mirza, Actor, India, Ms. Latha Reddy, Ambassador of India to Thailand, Mr. Pradeep Srivastava, CMO, Idea Cellular Services, Mr. Korn Dabbaransi, Former Deputy Prime Minister, Thailand, were a part of this enlightening dialogue.
Focused parallel sessions on Infrastructure & Real Estate, Gems & Jewellery, Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Automotive & Auto Components, Holistic Wellness & Hospitality were also conducted during the course of the day.
There meeting was well attended by over 500 Indian & Thai businesses.
